Semi-Truck Tire Technology Promotes Savings and Safety

Tagged truck tires help to address one of the trucking industry's ongoing concerns - tire safety. Now, Michelin has announced plans to incorporate radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in all of its truck tires. According to Ralph Dimenna, COO of Michelin Americas Truck Tires, the company is the very first to utilize RFID technology throughout an entire commercial truck tire portfolio.

Improved Tire Data

Michelin uses regular tags easily accessed by any RFID reader. The inclusion of such tags provides fleets with key data that can be used to improve lifetime tire performance and increase profitability. It will also help fleets to track tire assets with greater precision. Dimenna says the technology is already in place in 98 percent of Michelin's global tire output.

Tire Violations a Concern

RFID technology can help fleets to comply with regulations. Approximately 11 percent of all CSA violations involve tires, and each one is typically an eight-point violation. Common violations are for cuts or other damage, inadequate tread depth and under-inflation. About half of CSA tire violations involve insufficient tread depth. In general, tires must have a minimum tread depth of 2/32-in, although steer tires must have a tread depth of at least 4/32-in. CSA guidelines require that any tire maintenance violation detected by a roadside inspection remain with the driver's profile for three years and the carrier’s profile for two years.

Advisory Council Recommendation

With better data about a tire's life cycle, customers should be able to get more from their truck tires and avoid CSA violations. Fleet Ownersays Michelin's RFID initiative originally began with the company’s fleet advisory council. Its members provided feedback about the potential advantages of improved tire data, and the company responded.
